history: Sora’s canon history

alternate history: To begin with, Sora was born a girl. But that’s not the extent of the AU. It’s only the beginning. When she was born, her heart reached out to another, injured heart that needed help. Newly born, she was able to compensate for the injuries to the heart, connecting to both Ventus and Vanitas. This gave Vanitas a form of her own—a young woman who resembled Sora. Everything else remains canon up until the end of Birth by Sleep, save for Sora being a girl.

Four years after these events, we come to the point where everything changes. At the final battle against Vanitas and Master Xehanort, things went severely wrong. Mickey was unable to arrive in time to help Aqua, leading to her losing the use of her legs and Keyblade both because she was against one who now wielded to legendary χ-blade. And Vanitas became like a goddess. She shed the last shreds of her kindness, forming a human-shaped Unversed that resembled Ventus to take care of Aqua so the woman could watch the destruction of everything she held dear.

Not wishing to take orders anymore, she cut down Xehanort in Terra’s body, ending his life and removing all obstacles. From there, Vanitas traveled to Destiny Islands, and this is where Sora’s timeline drastically differed. As Riku watched, unable to do anything, Vanitas used her darkness and newfound power to break down Sora’s body and absorb her, preserving the heart—still awake and aware—within her. Sora would wait there for eleven years.

Riku one day arrived at Vanitas’ castle, where he quickly found himself being somewhat obsessed over. The combination of his scent being similar to Terra’s—thus pinging the remnants of Ventus still within her—and the memories of Sora’s childhood stirring strong emotions led to the beginning of a quick obsession (because Vanitas is incapable of feeling love). In order to possess Riku, she offered up a human-shaped Unversed shaped like Sora in return for Riku becoming her king.

He took the deal, and all of Sora’s memories and emotions were poured into an Unversed and given to Riku. The Unversed acted like Sora, thought like Sora, and was, for all intents and purposes, was Sora. As she is the shedding of Sora’s emotions, she is, in essence, Sora. She has since lived close to Riku, helping to keep him sane and remind him that there is hope, because she still exists and everything about her is too genuine to be a trick.

personality: To begin with, Sora is still Sora despite spending eleven years trapped inside Vanitas. She still had to watch everything, but this is also what gave her hope and kept her clinging to everything, showing that Sora is a very determined character who doesn’t like to give up for no reason. Watching Riku travel the worlds from a distance, seeing him restore as much hope as he could also gave her hope.

She is also a very optimistic person. Despite her circumstances, she can keep smiling because she’s not alone. She has Riku with her, she’s been reunited with her childhood friend, and this means that, maybe, something can be done about Vanitas. She’s always trying to look on the bright side despite circumstances, and always trying to cheer Riku up even though they’re both pretty much trapped.

Sora is also a very competitive person, challenging Riku to races through the halls of the castle. This isn’t something that has changed from childhood, and probably never will, as it helps Sora deal with the high levels of energy she has. It also just feels really good to stretch her legs after so long being trapped inside someone else.

Speaking of, Sora isn’t exactly mature. She last walked the worlds at the age of four, and all of her experiences since then were her watching from within Vanitas. So while she knows of quite a few things, this doesn’t mean she’s experienced them directly. This has the consequence of making her very much like an eager, young child.

This also means she is incredibly curious about things. If she and Riku don’t have anything actually planned for the day, she’ll often quietly read, absorbing information like a sponge. She also enjoys traveling with Riku to see other worlds because she’s still just as adventurous as she was back when she was a child, and she’s never gotten to experience the worlds first-hand.

However, this doesn’t mean she isn’t without her flaws. She is often haunted by what’s happened to her, so unless it’s Riku, she’ll actually shy away from touch. She also tends to act before she thinks, leaping into a situation before realizing the consequences. This has led to a few situations where she’s ended up hurt either emotionally or physically, especially once her ties to the Unversed get out. To this end, she has actually given up on trying to go swimming out of her own insecurities.

She also doesn’t do well alone, and never has. Perhaps the only thing that kept her sane while within Vanitas was that she was still technically with someone else. However, this has made her feel very lonely and isolated, as well as fairly socially awkward since she still somewhat operates like a small, over-eager child when it comes to attempts to befriend people.

This doesn’t mean, however, she’s as open as her canon counterpart. She has, after all, been isolated for eleven years, then made into a monster so her emotions wouldn’t affect Vanitas as strongly. And this last part has led to her being hurt by people she intended to help.

Speaking of, she tries very hard to be helpful, even going so far as to put others far before her own needs. She will willingly give up something she needs if another person needs it and not regret it even if it’s detrimental to her, because the happiness of others comes first—causing her to contrast with Vanitas and perhaps another reason why all of her thoughts and feelings were shed.

abilities/powers: Sora, as an Unversed, is physically fast and able to travel corridors of darkness safely. She is also much stronger than she seems, when it comes to physical strength. However, other than this, she is on par with humans—including being just as fragile, if not more so when Keyblades are involved.

first person sample: [Sora fiddled with the thin paper she once wore, tearing it to bits and pieces slowly. It’s not like it really mattered what happened to it, in the end. She wouldn’t ever need to wear it again.]

…It’s strange, the things you miss. Like your own clothes. …But I especially miss one thing…

[The bits of paper rained down to the floor like confetti, sprinkled across it with no order. She continued to pick apart the pajamas she woke up wearing, doing nothing but frowning at the pieces.]

…There was a necklace a friend gave me. A little crown necklace. I couldn’t wear it when I was little—it was way too big. And I… Never got the chance to wear it until recently. …I really want it back. Or to know that it’s with a very close friend of mine.

[She’s stopped picking and picking at the paper, sighing into her hands. What else was there to say, really? She wanted the memory—that tangible connection to one of the only friends she had.]

Alternatively, there is this.

third person sample: Perhaps it was silly, really, that she was so happy to be away from Vanitas’ reach, able to dart along streets as she pleases without the threat of people throwing rocks because word got around what she was. It didn’t make them any less dangerous, by being free of judgement was something she had long since been unable to feel except in the privacy of her master’s castle. And even then, she was subject to the jealousy and whims of said master, whatever they may be at the time.

But being with Riku was okay. Being with Riku was always okay. He was safe, someone who didn’t care what she was because he saw beneath the surface to the inside, where she was still Sora. He could care for her despite everything, and that made everything easier. But he’s not there, so she had to simply be thankful for the lack of judging eyes. Perhaps there was pity, in this world, for her—she, after all, didn’t choose to be what she was.

So perhaps that’s why she enjoyed darting along the streets whenever she can, taking in the sights and experiencing a world for herself. She hadn’t gotten to do that back home, really. Riku had shown her everything or she’d seen it through Vanitas’ eyes. So now was time for new experiences—her own experiences.

That Mer AU

The AU takes place in a world that's basically similar to Pirates of the Caribbean. Including magic and such.

Handy link for information about this AU and some of the workings, basically.

Once upon a time, there was a mermaid. She fell in love with a sailor, and he loved her back. They were happy together, and she even became pregnant with his child. However, they couldn't be. Their child was born, and surprise--it was twins. The girl, who greatly resembled a human, was left with her father, while her brother, with the tail of a tiger shark, was taken by their mother. So the girl, Sora, grew up with her tradesman father and his crew on his ship, sailing the seas, enchanted by the waves.

She was always an unnaturally good swimmer, and although the presence of a girl sometimes put some of the others on edge, she was useful and pulled her weight. She could dive deeper, swim faster, and hold her breath longer than any of the others on board, and so she could retrieve shellfish from deeper for them to eat on occasion. She grew up on tales of a man and a mermaid, enchanted by the tale and enjoying it. But things wouldn't always remain happy...

One night, when the rest of the crew was asleep and it was just Sora and her father awake, something happened. A storm was brewing, one that would surely endanger the ship. But before she could wake anyone, a young man climbed the side of the ship and offered his help. He knew of some rocks and how to navigate them to keep the ship safe. As they climbed to the helm, they found that, unfortunately, Sora's father had passed of a heart attack. There was no time to mourn, though, and so she waited while the boy steered the ship to safety. Once there, she said she wished to repay him, but didn't know how, and that there likely wasn't much she had.

"You'll do."

He grabbed her and dove over the side. Once in the water, she was trapped. He could overtake her, and barred her way to the ship. He made an offer: she could become a merperson, like him, or he would kill her and devour her. She took the former, not realizing what this meant. When she awoke, she was a mermaid--and found she couldn't step foot on land at all for the next ten years lest she change into driftwood.
